Where does the story begin, what motivated you to start Legin Knits?
It all started with the idea to learn how to crochet so I could make hats to cover my dreadlocks. After making lots of hats for myself, family and friends (which was actually me practicing the craft) I decided to show a few of my friends how to crochet too. The Company Legin Knits was born and the name derives from my nickname “Legin” which is Nigel backwards.
What’s been your most important lesson in business?
I feel like I could name so many different lessons because there are lots of typical lessons along the way. But overall I would say LEARN and LISTEN. Your ideas and your thoughts will guide you but everything around you matters. Be tuned in and not tuned out!
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of every single piece that I’ve made from day one. That’s my story and my legacy!
Who/What inspires you and what is your favourite quote?
My inspiration comes from what my soul tells me to do. I combined that with my own personal goal, which is to continue to evolve my creativity. I strongly believe that my abilities will allow me to create whatever I imagine possible. “Who or what inspires me?” – The Most High, Creation, Nature, People, Colours, Life, Good, Bad, Ugly, Beautiful, Natural, Shapes, Sizes, Seasons…etc, etc.)
I love quotes and use them on a daily basis to keep me going. “Your biggest obstacle will be your greatest victory” is a very powerful one for me.

What helps you keep going on days you want to quit?
I’ve come to realize that its either you’re in or you’re out! So you will have many circumstances to encounter and many different emotions wrapped up in this. But don’t let it get the best of you. You are expected to give up and expected to quit…so don’t! Self reflection is always good. Just be honest with yourself.
What advice do you have for someone who would like to start a similar venture?
1. Know yourself and all of your habits because that will play a part.
2. Be passionate
3. Learn how to learn
4. Don’t put things off until later, take whatever it is you need to get accomplished as close as you can to completion, so that when the pieces fall into place you’re ready to go… (as opposed to) waiting for things to be perfect before moving forward) This can destroy you.
Whats “the” one product we need to check out?
Now this is a tough question… Everything!!! lol
Head-wear has always been a specialty so you definitely want to check out the hats. As of recent I’ve been doing crochet detailing on sneakers which has caught the attention of many and is a “must have” rare, one of a kind product. The lion logo continues to be a big hit for the LK clothing and head-wear collection. Only available in limited quantities. Some pieces are used for custom crochet detailing
How do you balance life and work?
I strongly believe that “balance is key” so remember happiness of self comes first (not after you feel you’ve done it all).
Your health along with wealth is great, but never the other way around. Be mindful of how and where you spend your time, because you never get that back.
Sometimes it will be work, work, work, work, work and nothing else. Other times you will have to work along with getting other aspects of life taken care of. But then there’s that time when you need to take dedicated time off…period!
