Art and Memories with Uma J
I came across Uma J on Tumblr, her work opened the flood gates of my memory. It brought me back to my childhood; growing up in the cultural melting pot that is Guyana. Uma’s work takes me back to the twinkling diya’s on a dark Diwali night or the spray of colourful powders (abeer) on Phagwah day. (aka Holi)
Uma’s illustrations are filled with bold colours and are the perfect blend of intricacy and mystery. Uma gives her illustrations interesting and often humorous captions. However, I believe what draws the viewer in; is Uma’s decision to leave out the facial features in each of her pieces, this enhances the experience of the viewer by sparking your imagination.
Uma J is an illustrator and environmentalist from Australia and her work is inspired by Sri-Lankan tradition. You can view more of her work on her Tumblr page. You can also purchase a print from her etsy store or follow her work on Instagram.
Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.-Thomas Merton
and Uma’s work allowed me to do that.
